Team Bronze for Ulster
09 Mar 2009
The University of Ulster’s Jordanstown campus hosted two major national athletics competitions this weekend.
The Irish Schools Cross-Country Championships and Irish Universities Cross-Country Championships.
Despite the sheets of rain throughout the day and the wintery winds all eight races ran smoothly throughout the day
The course itself was pleasing to spectators who could watch from every angle and was also a challenge for competitors with some twists and turns, firm fast running and muddy patches, there was something for everyone.
It was the second year the Irish Schools and the Irish Universities Athletics Association had decided to hold the competitions on the same day - but the first time the joint venture had come to Ulster.
DCU had double success witrh Brendan O'Neill, Brian Farrell and John Coghlan leading the Men to a one, two, three victory and team gold with University Limerick settling for the silver team medals. Linda Byrne took the Ladies from Aoife Byrne of Trinity, leading DCU ladies to team gold also. Trinity clinch team silver.
The University of Ulster men's team was lead by Diarmuid Grant who finish an impressive 6th position with Ryan Faulkner (8) and Jarlath Falls (13) also having very strong runs. Declan Reed (22), Emmett McGinty (23), Kevin Carlin (62), Philip Goss (63), Jason Wilson (64) and Daniel Quinn (69) made up the rest of the 9 man team for Ulster.
The Ulster ladies also came away with team medals with Sarah McGowan leading them in 15th position foloowed by Eva McNelis (22), Sarah Quee (25) and Anne arie Kane (30).
Congratulations to all the Universities and schools who were competing at the weekend.
